CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — The grief of losing a loved one is indescribable—especially one's child. Yvonne "Bonnie" Miller transformed the grief of losing her son Christopher into a nonprofit where she helps other grieving mothers.
Miller lost her son, Christopher Kelly, in 2020 to gun violence.
"Nobody knows what we go through except us," Miller said.
In 2023, Miller founded A Cry For You, a nonprofit organization providing support to grieving mothers who lost their children to gun violence.
"It's about getting women together that have lost their child to gun violence so that we can create some type of self-care and be able to help our other children. Because if we can't take care of ourselves, we can't take care of our other children," Miller explained.
A Cry for You will hold its second-annual Sons and Daughters in Heaven Gala to raise money to help them continue their mission.
"It is just a fundraiser to promote healing for the mothers, and for the community to see our children before they pass," Miller said.
The Sons and Daughters in Heaven Gala is on Sunday, Sept. 28, starting at 3 p.m. at the Eastland Suites at 1907 N. Cunningham Ave in Urbana. Tickets to the Gala are $40, and a table of seven is $250. To purchase tickets, email acryforyou@gmail.com.
