DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Progress is being made to replace aging Reas Bridge, which is actually a two-bridge structure, over Lake Decatur. Built in 1957 Reas Bridge is considered to be in the worst condition of any bridge in Macon County.

“They’re both in critical shape. They’re borderline being closed by IDOT,” said Republican Macon County Board Chairman Kevin Greenfield.

Greenfield says he hopes the project can be completed by the end of 2025. The cost could be up to $34 million. He confirms the county could use an additional amount up to $3 million to fully complete it.

The old bridge is currently under weight restrictions. A new structure will allow heavier trucks carrying grain and freight to move over the bridge instead of using an alternative route. Construction of the new bridge is about one-quarter finished. It will eventually be part of a new 4 lane beltway.
