SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Thursday night, hundreds of protesters marched in solidarity with Sonya Massey's family.
This gathering was a show of support for Massey who was shot and killed by a Sangamon County Sheriff's deputy on July 6. Body camera footage from the shooting was released on Monday.
The deputy, Sean P. Grayson, was charged with three counts of murder for his actions during the deadly 911 call.
State Senator Doris Turner, a friend of Sonya and the Massey family, said that protesters will continue to stand up for the Massey family. "Just because there's been an arrest doesn't mean that it's over. This the first step."
Senator Turner said that she is working with local, state, and federal officials to determine what reform may be necessary. "It's a process," said Turner, "It doesn't happen overnight. But we will stay steadfast and immovable on the path until we so see what we need to see in order to make sure that this family feels like they have justice."
A GoFundMe has been started to support Massey's family. In the description for the fundraiser, her family writes that "Sonya loved cooking, doing hair, nurturing her children, and spending time with her family."
Cards, letters of encouragement or contributions in the form of a check can be sent to Massey's father:
