SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — The City of Springfield has completed work on converting select one-way streets into two-way traffic.
The project was aimed at improving traffic flow and accessibility on the following streets:
4th Street from South Grand Ave to Dodge St
Adams Street from 6th St to 9th St
Reverse-angle parking was also implemented on the south side of Adams Street.
Last month, J Heavisides, the Springfield City Traffic Engineer explained the reasoning behind the changes.
"The previous administration and some of the downtown businesses kind of identified other areas in other cities where they saw an economic boost to converting to two way streets," said Heavisides. "If you think about it, you'd come up and want to make a right hand turn but could only turn left, so you'd have to keep driving and make three right turns instead."
Drivers and pedestrians should use caution when traveling in the newly converted areas. When approaching and entering intersections and driveways, pay attention to vehicles and pedestrians who may be unfamiliar with the new traffic patterns.
