SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — The 31st Annual Fallen Firefighter Memorial Service and Medal of Honor Ceremony will take place on Tuesday, May 14 at the Firefighter Memorial on the State Capitol Grounds.
Five firefighters who died in the line of duty during 2023 will be honored at the memorial, including Maroa Fire Chief Larry Peasley.

Chief Peasley served the Maroa community for over 40 years. He collapsed while heading out to a mutual aid call to assist the Clinton Volunteer Fire Department. He was taken to the hospital where he remained until his passing on Jan. 4, 2023.
The Illinois Firefighter Memorial
After the memorial ceremony, the group will gather at the Bank of Springfield Center to honor those who have selflessly given their all protecting the citizens of their communities during 2023. Firefighters from Teutopolis, Montrose, and Peoria will be recognized, among others.
