(WAND) — The USDA announced its new dietary guidelines for Americans, revealing the "New Pyramid."

The USDA updated its dietary guidelines every five years, and the New Pyramid will replace "My Plate," which has been the guideline since 2011.

The New Pyramid prioritizes "real food," emphasizing the importance of eating protein, healthy fats, fruits, vegetables and whole grains and avoiding ultra-processed foods.

U.S Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said it will change the nation.

"These new guidelines will revolutionize our nation's food culture and make America healthy again," Kennedy said.

The guidelines emphasize eating protein with every meal and receiving the bulk of your healthy fats from foods you already consume. They suggest using nutrient-dense ingredients while cooking. They advise eating whole wheat options over processed options like white bread, flour tortillas, or crackers. They recommend avoiding added sugars and alcohol entirely.

The USDA said that the focus on protein and veggies will support muscle health, metabolic function, gut health and stable energy.

The New Pyramid will serve as recommendations for what schools serve students, what SNAP covers, and what doctors advise their patients.
