SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — The United States Postal Service announced that Springfield's Processing and Distribution Center would be shifted into a Local Processing Center as part of a modernization effort.
Multiple lawmakers have shared their concerns in recent months about the plan to reorganize USPS facilities in Springfield and Champaign.
According to the postal service, "the business case supports transferring mail processing outgoing operations to the St. Louis P&DC in St. Louis" as most mail sent in the area is destined beyond Springfield.

Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza was concerned that delays could affect delivery of important mail such as paychecks and reimbursements.
“My office sends out about 11,000 checks a day to home health care workers, childcare providers and other state providers and vendors,” says Comptroller Mendoza. “Even a one-day delay could cause serious hardship for these providers and businesses.”
Last month, Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski filed H.R. 8040, which would prevent the consolidation of P&DCs in areas that are underperforming in meeting delivery goals.
The move from USPS is part of a $40 billion investment strategy to upgrade and improve the postal processing, transportation, and delivery networks.
