CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - Illini men's basketball head coach Brad Underwood and the University of Illinois have agreed to new terms on his current six-year contract, the University announced Thursday.
Illinois Athletics said that Underwood's contract, which runs through June 2032, could extend to June 2036, depending on the team's performance over the next four seasons.
The agreement would also put Underwood among the highest-paid coaches in the sport.Â
Illinois is coming off its first Final Four appearance since the historic 2005 campaign.Â
Underwood has guided the Fighting Illini to six straight NCAA Tournaments and three Big Ten championships.Â
"This new contract reflects the hard work and achievements of our players, coaches and staff, as well as the incredibly loyal fans and donors who support us. Illinois is a special place, and we're coming off a special year with a trip to the Final Four. But we know there is still more to achieve," Underwood said in a statement.Â
The U of I Board of Trustees will vote on the extension at its May 21 meeting.Â
