DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Families spent the weekend putting creativity and speed to the test at the Children's Museum of Illinois.

The museum hosted its second pinewood derby clinic Saturday, welcoming kids and parents for a hands-on day of building and fun.

Participants got to design, cut and decorate their own pinewood derby cars with help from experts.

Organizers said the clinic combined learning, creativity and quality family time.

"These kinds of gatherings build collaboration, leadership skills, and all kinds of different teamwork skills," said Scouting America District Executive Nina De Lude. "The scouts get to work together and be creative, but they also get to see what others are doing. They get to make connections and friendships and also get to learn different skills that they didn't previously have."

The Children's Museum of Illinois said more hands-on workshops are planned throughout the year.
