MATTOON, Ill. (WAND) — Mattoon CUSD #2 has announced the hiring of Heath Uppencamp as the new Head Baseball Coach at Mattoon High School.

Uppencamp has lived in Mattoon for nearly 20 years and has been involved in youth athletics in the community for the past decade. He has coached both baseball and basketball at the youth level and has served as a volunteer assistant with the Mattoon High School basketball program.

For the past eight years, he has also coached the Mattoon Hit-Men travel baseball program, working with many of the athletes who are now members of the high school program.

His baseball background includes three state championships as a player at Jasper High School in Indiana, where he was a two-time First Team All State selection and earned the win in the state championship game as a pitcher during both his junior and senior seasons.

He continued his playing career at Purdue University, where he was a four-year letter winner, two-way player, and three-time Academic All Big Ten selection.

Uppencamp said the coaches and mentors he had throughout his playing career helped shape his approach to the game and continue to serve as valuable resources. His experience also includes serving as the Babe Ruth All Star coach for the 2024 Illinois State Championship team.

Mattoon High School Athletic Director Trent Duckett said Uppencamp's experience and longstanding connection to Mattoon make him a strong fit for the program.

"Greenwave Baseball is excited to welcome Heath Uppencamp as our new head baseball coach. His extensive experience, from his success at the collegiate level to his long-standing dedication to Mattoon youth athletics, makes him an exceptional fit to lead our program and continue building a culture of teamwork and excellence. I look forward to watching Coach Uppencamp foster a love of baseball in our student-athletes."
