Time for Taxes! Here's what you need to know

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - The University of Illinois is offering free tax help to those in need.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program offers free tax help to low-income (gross income less than $69,000), elderly, disabled, and limited English speaking taxpayers.

The program opens Tuesday, Feb. 3, and will start accepting clients then.

To participate, bring identification and tax documents (see a list here of what to bring) to Salt & Light (1819 Philo Rd. in Urbana) during VITA drop-off hours.

No appointment is necessary.

During the visit, a trained volunteer will conduct a short interview, verify your identity, and scan relevant tax documents to a secure folder. Following your visit, students from the Department of Accountancy at Gies College of Business, trained through the IRS VITA program, will prepare your tax return.

Drop off hours are Tuesday from 3-7 p.m., Wednesday through Friday from 1-5 p.m., and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
