CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — The 2024 Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration will be honoring three special community members for all of their work to make Champaign a better place.

Rev. Herbert Burnett is a popular face in the city. He works with kids of all ages to help curb the violence and to keep them out of trouble.

"I'm really excited about hood to hood mentoring. I've been watching this community and the way it's moved. Just trying to get to the ones who've already made the mistakes," said Burnett.

Burnett was awarded with the Doris Hoskins Prestigious Community Service Award recognizing all of his work.

"I want the ones that's not in the game to get off the bench and get in the game, because everybody has a role to play in this and it takes all hands on deck," stated Burnett.
