CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND)- The Illinois Department of Transportation marked major progress in 2025 on the $251.8 million reconstruction of the Interstate 57/74 interchange in Champaign.
According to IDOT, the long-term project replaces an outdated cloverleaf design with a safer and more efficient interchange at a busy freight corridor that accommodates nearly 40,000 vehicles daily.
This year, IDOT opened several new ramps, including important links between I-57 and I-74, along with two five-story flyover ramps. Seven out of eight ramps are now complete, and the last ramp will be rebuilt next year. Paving on both interstates is ongoing and will continue until 2026.
The project’s next phase is expected to finish by the end of 2026, with final striping and landscaping continuing into spring 2027.
IDOT advises drivers to expect delays, watch for changing traffic patterns, and be cautious in work zones.
Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation.
