BLUE MOUND, Ill. (WAND) - The Village of Blue Mound is urging residents not to give tap water to infants under six months due to levels of nitrate above drinking water standards.

Blue Mound posted on Facebook Thursday evening that its water sample collected Sept. 3 showed nitrate levels of 12 milligrams per liter. The Village's system was said to exceed the standard for nitrate at 10 mg/L.

The post added that the water should not be given to infants under six months or used to make formula. Infants under six months who drink water containing high levels of nitrate can become seriously ill and could die if untreated.

However, adults and children older than six months can still drink the tap water, as they can process nitrates better than infants that young. Blue Mound is also urging residents not to boil the water since it does not reduce the nitrate level.

The Village shared in the post that the Water Department will continue regularly backwashing nitrate filters and anticipates the problem being resolved by Sept. 12.

Residents are encouraged to call the Blue Mound Water Department at 217-692-2822.
