Coles County Emergency Management Director Jim Hilgenberg told WAND News he was not aware of any injuries.

It's unclear what caused the two-story building to collapse.

The City of Mattoon posted on Facebook that several roads around the building were closed. The City asked people to stay away from the area to allow emergency responders a safe space to work. The road closures include:

  • 19th Street between Charleston Ave. and Richmond Ave.
  • Broadway between 19th and 21st
  • Western between 19th and 21st
  • Prairie between 19th and 20th

Mattoon police didn't have any details to share yet. The Charleston Fire Department also responded.

Mattoon Fire Chief Jeff Hilligoss said during a press conference around 3 p.m. that there was a large gas leak that Ameren is working to contain.

Hilligoss said a smoke shop housed inside the building suffered the most damage. Little Caesar's behind the business was also damaged.

At this time, he said there are no concerns about other portions of the building collapsing.

Hilligoss added that first responders are still in search mode to confirm no one was inside the building at the time of the collapse.

WAND News has a crew headed to the scene and is working to gather more information.

This is a developing story.
