DANVILLE, Ill. (WAND) — A Danville man was found guilty Wednesday of attacking a bailiff inside the Vermilion County courthouse in 2023.

A jury found 36-year-old Lawrence Hancock guilty of two counts of aggravated battery.

According to a press release from the Vermilion County State's Attorney, in February 2023, Hancock was asked to follow a rule of the court and take off his head covering before entering a courtroom in the Vermilion County courthouse.

Hancock refused and was asked to wait outside until his case was called, according to the release.

The State's Attorney said the court bailiff called Hancock back into the courtroom. As he entered, Hancock shoved the bailiff into the doorway, injuring the bailiff's hand and making it bleed.

Hancock's sentencing hearing is scheduled for April 3, 2026.
