Proposed site for solar panel facility

Proposed site in Decatur, Illinois for solar panels over 27.5 acres near the Macon County Fairgrounds. January 5, 2026.

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — A new commercial-scale solar energy facility is set to be built in Decatur this year, following unanimous approval from the Decatur City Council.

The project, being developed by a Texas-based company, will occupy 27.5 acres at the corner of West Mound Road and North Westlawn Avenue, northwest of the Macon County Fairgrounds. The land, previously used for farming, will be fully covered with solar panels.

City officials say the development agreement includes protections for Decatur, outlining how the facility will be decommissioned when it reaches the end of its life. The agreement requires the developer to remove all solar infrastructure and restore the site.

The project marks a major step forward in expanding renewable energy in Decatur and the surrounding area.
