CHATHAM, Ill. (WAND) - Chatham police are working to cut down on arrests and establish more effective community policing.Â
The Chatham Police Department posted on Facebook Tuesday that it has partnered with the Sangamon County Treatment Alternatives for Safe Community (TASC) deflection specialists.Â
According to TASC's website, deflection is when police and first responders help those who have overdosed or have substance abuse disorders, rather than simply arresting or admitting them to the emergency room.Â
Chatham police will refer those in need of a TASC deflection specialist to get services that match their needs.Â
Additionally, police will follow up with people they referred to specialists to stay informed on their progress.Â
More information on the program is available online.Â
