SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - In November, Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski sent a letter to the management of Sangamon Towers, demanding answers regarding complaints about living conditions. Many people who live there told Budzinski there were health and safety concerns, including assaults, arson, mold, bedbugs and other things.Â
"Issues have been going on at Sangamon Towers frankly, far too long," Budzinski said. "Number one, obviously, is real security concerns of the residents."Â
A resident who spoke to WAND News said he was assaulted by a non-resident who entered the building. He also said there are often used needles in two spots along the facility.Â
Kayla Watson has been a caregiver in the building for 12 years. While residents often share concerns with her, they don't want to share with management because of fear of retaliation. Watson was in the meeting at Sangamon Towers Management and said they confirmed residents would not be penalized for voicing concerns.Â
"If they're just going in and making a complaint of the condition of their apartment of the property, they have said today that they are in no trouble," Watson said. "They need to speak about it. So I'm going to go back and start encouraging my seniors to come forward."Â
Budzinski said residents she's spoken to are afraid they will be evicted or retaliated against if they share issues. Many said they don't have anywhere else to live if something happens at Sangamon Towers.Â
In the meeting, management told Budzinski they've made improvements in recent months, especially related to security. They have 24/7 security on hand, and are making plans to add security cameras and better outdoor lighting. Budzinski said the company wants to add fences or other barriers to ensure only residents are on the property.Â
Budzinski said she will be in touch with Sangamon Towers management moving forward and hold them accountable for the changes they have promised to make.Â
