DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - Severe weather returns to the forecast right after last week's storms caused structural damage and power outages.
Ed Shimon, a National Weather Service meteorologist, described ways to stay safe.
Â
"If you hear the word warning, you should think, 'I need to get inside. I need to get into a safe location no matter where I am,'" Shimon said.
Â
"If I'm in a big warehouse building and I hear a warning, then I'm going to get out of where I'm at and get to where I know is a safe location, generally in the lowest level of a home," Shimon continued.Â
Paying attention to rumbles of thunder and heavy winds if you're not near your phone are ways that meteorologists recommend to ensure safety.
Â
WAND Meteorologist Alivia Colon also suggested keeping devices near you at all times to stay updated.
Â
"Use your phone or use a computer or a laptop," Colon said.
Â
"My biggest tip is always just making sure you have multiple ways to receive alerts. Many people have the WAND weather app on their phone, but anything will do as long as you can get that critical information."
