DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — As the snow plows continued to clean up the aftermath of central Illinois' first winter storm of the season, Decatur residents were shoveling their way out of the house Sunday.
74-year-old Elaine Root wrestled with icy snow blocking her driveway.
"I was going to go out and scoop the ice chunks that are left after they plowed the road," said Root.
Car experts say when salt and icy snow mix, it can cause rust underneath your car. Root was concerned about how the big chunks of ice would impact her car.
"One thing I wish I had done was raise my wipers up before the snow started. I wasn't expecting the ice part," said Root.
As she started hacking at the ice, a gentleman came by to help shovel snow from under her car and driveway.
"We appreciate [the help] greatly. It's kind of a challenge for older people like me," said Root.
With more snow on the way, experts say make sure your washer fluid is full.Â
