CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — An early morning shooting Sunday leaves one person dead and one person hurt. 

It happened in the 1100 block of N. Mattis Avenue just before 2 a.m. 

Champaign Police says, when they arrived there was evidence of a shooting but everyone had dispersed. A short time later, police were called to an area hospital after two people had arrived with gunshot wounds. 

Police say, 24 year old Jawon Brown of Rantoul was shot in the torso and later died from his injuries. A 28 year old man also from Rantoul was shot in the leg, he is expected to recover. 

Initial investigation shows that people were in the parking lot of a business near the intersection of Mattis Avenue and Bradley Avenue Police say, a unknown subjects pulled out a gun and started shooting and hitting the two people and damaging one vehicle. Everyone left the scene quickly after.

Officers are looking for witnesses and video footage that may be of investigative assistance.

Any resident or business in the nearby area with exterior surveillance camera systems is encouraged to notify the police department.

The investigation remains ongoing.
