SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - A new ordinance may require residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities to begin paying for lift assists.
Ordinance 2025-172 is proposing an amendment to the city code that would allow the city to charge and collect fees from assisted living facilities, independent living facilities, nursing care centers, and nursing homes.
A lift assist refers to the act of physically moving someone to a different position without the need for medical attention afterward. This proposal is similar to an ordinance that the Decatur City Council implemented earlier this year, which mandates a fee of $500 for lift assists.
In comparison, the City of Springfield is proposing a minimum fee of $350 per lift assist, which must be paid within 30 days of the service provided. If approved, the ordinance would be in effect for one year and then reviewed for further consideration.
The next Springfield City Council meeting is scheduled for April 29th, where this ordinance will be discussed further.
