CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - Preliminary rounds for high school boy's wrestling state finals offered plenty of excitement, and perhaps a tease for what's to come as the tournament continues.
Warrensburg-Latham had a successful day with two athletes pushing themselves through to the next round. Logan Roberts drew a major decision for the victory, while Charlie Whittmer made the most of a 13-8 lead on points to run out the clock and move on.
Unity Christian's program continues to show their strength. The Verheecke twins, Garrett and Clinton both are hungry for a chance at the title once again. Each of them pinned their respected opponents in less than 90 seconds.
Mt. Zion has advanced several wrestlers to the quarterfinals. Carson Thorton made the most of some early moves to clinch an 8-2 decision, His teammate Keller stocks overcame a 5-point deficit by pinning his foe to the mat.
Tolono Unity has the attention of many, with six wrestlers moving on to represent their school. This includes Hunter Shike (5-3 decision) and Taylor Finley (10-2 major decision).
The tournament continues Friday as the athletes continue to fight for their shot on the podium.
