DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Decatur community members gathered Saturday to honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ahead of MLK day.
People lined the streets for the annual MLK Remembrance March, walking together to reflect on Dr. King's message of equality and justice.
Families, students, faith leaders and local officials joined the march, carrying signs and speaking as they moved from Mueller Park to the Decatur Civic Center.
"This day reminds us that service is not seasonal, justice is not optional, and love is the greatest verse that this world has ever known," said organizer Jayjuan Young. "Today, as we march, let us do more than walk. Let us commit, let us reach, let us check on our people, not just when it is easy but when it is uncomfortable. Not just when it is popular, but when it is necessary."
Organizers said the event serves not only as a tribute to Dr. King's work, but also as a call to action. They encouraged people to continue pushing for fairness and understanding long after the march ends.
