SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - An opportunity to get a closer look at one of the most important documents in the history of the United States.
The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum will display a signed copy of the Emancipation Proclamation beginning Jan. 1 through Feb. 3.
Signed by Lincoln and Secretary of State William Seward, it is one of roughly two dozen existing copies.
The copies were originally made and signed to raise money for wounded soldiers.
“We are proud to give our visitors an additional chance to see it for themselves and to reflect on what it took to free four million Americans from enslavement,” said ALPLM Executive Director Christina Shutt in a statement.
