Billions of dollars in cuts to critical human services programs are set to take effect July 1st.
Home care and child care workers rallied outside the State Capitol as part of a series of statewide protests aimed at members of the Illinois House of Representatives who voted against an increase in the state's income tax. Protesters called on representatives to urge their colleagues and leaders to return to Springfield to stop the cuts and pass needed revenue.
"So you are going to have a whole bunch of people in institutions that are going to cost the state a lot more money in the long run and you are going to have thousands upon thousands of personal assistance out of work so they are not going to be paying income taxes as a result of this," said Dave Munroe, the Springfield Center for Independent Living Employment Resources Coordinator.
