CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) -- A man has been arrested in connection with a shooting near the University of Illinois Campus Saturday morning that left a person hospitalized.
On Monday, Decoven Stephens, 18, of Urbana was arrested after a search warrant was executed at his home. Stephens was taken into custody, and multiple pieces of evidence were recovered, including the handgun believed to be involved in the shooting.
Stephens is charged with attempted first-degree murder and is scheduled for arraignment on October 20, 2025.
The University of Illinois Police Department said the shooting happened near Green Street and Fifth Street around 12:30 a.m.
Officers found one man who was shot when they arrived. Police said he was taken to the hospital, where he had surgery.Â
Investigators said the shooting followed a verbal altercation between multiple people. The victim became involved and was shot.Â
