URBANA, Ill. (WAND) -Â Urbana schools were placed on a temporary lockdown Tuesday afternoon after a shooting nearby sent a woman to the hospital.
According to Urbana police, officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 900 block of South Vine Street around 1:55 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers said they located a 21-year-old female suffering from a gunshot wound. The woman was taken to a local hospital, where she remains in serious condition.
Police said due to the proximity of the incident to Urbana Middle School and Urbana High School, both schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution until the scene was determined to be secure.
After further investigation, officers identified the suspect as the victim’s boyfriend, 21-year-old Noah Allen of Urbana.
Allen was taken into custody and arrested on preliminary charges of aggravated domestic battery, attempted first degree murder, and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.
Urbana PD told WAND that the incident appears to be domestic-related, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
WAND reached out to Urbana School District #116 for comment, they responded with the following statement:
"Urbana High School, Urbana Middle School, Urbana Sixth Grade Center and the Urbana Adult Education Center were placed on lockdown Tuesday, and Urbana police "initiated" the lockdown due to the nearby incident."
